Attorney General Alan Wilson to Speak on Offshore Drilling and Seismic Testing February 25th at The Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber

Staff Report From Low Country CEO

Monday, February 11th, 2019

The Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce continues their In The Know series on Monday, February 25th from 10:00 – 12:00 p.m. at the Omni Hilton Head Oceanfront Resort. The last presentation in a four-part series, the topic will focus on Offshore Drilling in South Carolina. The presenter will be Attorney General Alan Wilson.

Backed by GOP Governor Henry McMaster, Wilson became the first Republican attorney general to join a legal fight launched by 16 S.C. cities, nine environmental groups and nine Democratic state attorneys general to halt permits for exploration off the Atlantic Coast. Those suing say any exploration will harm the environment and South Carolina tourism.

The issue of offshore drilling and the potential harm to South Carolina's coastal environment could have a sizable impact on the state's tourism, one of it's largest industries. Those against drilling are concerned for the potential of oil spills that would drive away visitors, negatively impacting businesses and local economies.

According to the lawsuit, seismic testing is also a concern for marine life. The unceasing booming noises could kill thousands of dolphins, whales, and fish.

“Our chamber has invited Attorney General Wilson to the very coastline that would see and feel the effects of offshore drilling on its economy and environment,” says Hannah Horne, the chamber’s Vice President of Public Policy and Programs. “We expect a thoughtful, insightful discussion from our chamber partners and the community on what the next steps are in this difficult legal fight against the federal government.”

The chamber's In the Know series to date has hosted state, regional and national leaders to provide updates on current political policy, community growth and economic development initiatives, projects, and issues that impact the Lowcountry business community.
