Thursday, July 11th, 2019

For the fourth consecutive year, Hilton Head Island was today named the “Best Island in the Continental U.S.” in the Travel + Leisure World's Best Awards 2019 readers' survey.

Hilton Head Island’s reputation for world-class accommodations and restaurants, pristine beaches, and endless opportunities for recreation and relaxation brought it again to the No. 1 Island spot in the magazine’s annual poll. The barrier island has been at the top of the prestigious list since 2016.

“Being chosen as the No. 1 island by the readers of Travel + Leisure shows the world has discovered and values what we’ve known all along—that Hilton Head Island is a truly special place,” said Hilton Head Island Mayor John McCann. “It’s an honor to be recognized as the top island for the fourth year in a row.”

"We are thrilled and honored that the savvy readers of Travel + Leisure voted Hilton Head Island as the No. 1 Island in the Continental U.S. for the fourth year in a row," said Bill Miles, President & CEO of the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce. “It is one of the most coveted awards in travel. When our tourism industry is healthy, the rest of the Lowcountry community benefits through jobs, higher property values, quality of life and more.”

Hilton Head Island welcomed 2.62 million visitors in 2018, which had a $1.4 billion economic impact, according to Regional Transactions Concepts, LLC, USCB, and the DestiMetrics/STR Two-Source Report.

The Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport is also moving up the recognition ranks and was recognized as the No. 4 airport in the nation. Last year, it was No. 7.  Montage Palmetto Bluff is also honored among the top 10 best resort hotels in the south.

The announcement of the winners will be broadcast this morning to the Today Show's 1.8 million viewers by Travel + Leisure Editor-in-Chief Jacqueline Gifford.

Travel + Leisure's annual World's Best readers' survey ranks cities, islands, hotels, cruise lines, destination spas, transportation, and tours and safaris around the world.
