Trolley Service Returns to HHI 6/22; Fare-Free Service; New Safety Measures
Monday, June 15th, 2020
The Breeze Trolleys serving Hilton Head Island will commence their third season of service starting Monday, June 22. The trolley route, service hours, and stops are the same as last year, but one significant difference is that the service will be free to ride all season, thanks to additional funding being provided by the Town of Hilton Head Island. The trolley service is provided by the Lowcountry Regional Transportation Authority who also operates Palmetto Breeze Transit services.
To contain the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus, The Breeze is implementing some new and innovative safety precautions, including frequent cleaning and disinfecting of the trolleys by Palmetto Breeze's maintenance team using high-tech sprayers, customized clear plexiglass modesty panels beside the trolley driver, "one-way" boarding and exiting procedures (with passengers boarding in front and exiting through the rear door), social distancing while riding, hand sanitizer, and encouraging passengers to wear facial coverings.
“Our team has developed some very creative ways to ensure we provide the safest possible public service,” said Mary Lou Franzoni, Palmetto Breeze Transit’s Executive Director. “Our maintenance and operations teams really went the extra mile to be sure our trolley passengers will be safe while riding, and to ensure that The Breeze continues to add to the Hilton Head Island experience for both residents and visitors by eliminating congestion along some of our busiest streets.”
The service will run 1 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., Sunday through Thursday, and 1 p.m. to Midnight, Fridays and Saturdays, reaching each stop approximately every 30 minutes. More information can be found at www.breezetrolley.com. Service is expected to continue operating through October.
